    ⏯ Anatomy of the Harmonium

  • n the Bhakti tradition, the voice itself is our true instrument, while the harmonium serves as a supportive companion. It is through our voice that we create melodies, bring out nuances, and shape the entire experience. That’s why it’s so important to warm up your voice, explore both high and low ranges, and repeat these exercises before every lesson to prepare your body and mind for singing.

  • This is a prayer each one of us can practice every day. It reminds us that our relationships with all beings and things should be mutually beneficial if we ourselves desire happiness and liberation from suffering. No true or lasting happiness can come from causing unhappiness to others. No true or lasting freedom can come from depriving others of their freedom. If we say we want every being to be happy and free, then we have to question everything that we do - how we live, how we eat, what we buy, how we speak, and even how we think.

  • This chant is to Ganesha. He is the remover of obstacles, the companion of travelers, and especially when we need help with new beginnings, Ganesha stands by our side lovingly. He removes all obstacles from the path, takes away your worries, concerns, and fears, and instead gives you strength, joy, and enthusiasm for the new. For this very reason, Ganapati is invoked before every ritual, every major endeavor, like starting to play a new instrument and embarking on the journey of Bhakti.

  • This next Mantra on our chanting and harmonium journey, is a chant to Rama. It is very beginner friendly to play as well as to join for singing in a group. I like to play this mantra when i feel that the group is inexperienced in chanting and needs something simple to follow and start with.

It is said, that one who sings to Lord Rama has very strong mental stability and is strong enough to surpass any difficult situation. Chanting the word Rama is enough to bring positive energy and awaken the soul. “Sri Ram '' is the yin(Sri) and yang(ram) of the soul, and brings balance to the Ida Pingala nadis of the body.

  • This Mantra, also called the Mahamantra, is very famous, not only because of the ISKON Community (Hare Krishna's). Different interpretations of the words Rama lead to different meanings of this mantra. my favorite meaning you can find in the PDF file attached to this lesson.

  • The last chant in this foundational Harmonium course will take your skills to the next level. New chords, more chords and a little bit different switches in the two lines, make it our most difficult mantra yet.

Once you have the hang of it, I'm sure you will love it as much as I do! It's fun to play and to sing, alone or in a group!

May the divine energy of the universal mother triumph, within me and everywhere in the world. May we experience her divinity everywhere!
